Ireland Declared A Luxury Group Before It Owned The Brands
VYKO has named itself Ireland's first luxury group while owning none of the houses it means to gather. It inverts the order LVMH followed, betting a national-luxury story can attract brands before any of them are bought.
Sir John Crabstone
VYKO calls itself Ireland’s first luxury group. It owns no luxury brands. A group is a plural noun; VYKO has the noun and is shopping for the plural.
The model it invokes ran the other way. Bernard Arnault took Dior, then Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy, and let the holding company form around what he already owned. The name LVMH is an inventory. VYKO has taken the inventory’s shape and none of its contents.
VYKO’s founder Ashley McDonnell, formerly of LVMH and Puig and the creator of Irish Fashion Week, has scanned 500 Irish labels, opened talks with 35, and reached a letter of interest with two. Two are near completion: one near €500,000, one above €10 million. She means to raise €50 million by year-end, though she concedes she could fund the first purchase herself — her share of Puig’s 2024 IPO returned enough capital to close the first acquisition without the raise.
This is not a luxury group — it is the prospectus for one.
The order is the whole story. A conglomerate earns its name by first owning the houses the name describes; VYKO has reversed the sequence and asked the description to do the owning. Narrative is being made to carry the weight that capital usually carries.
FashionUnited christened VYKO “the LVMH of Irish luxury”; McDonnell herself invokes Kering as a second model. The label flatters a structure that is mostly intention. McDonnell’s wager is that Celtic luxury — Donegal tweed, Aran knitwear — can pull independent houses toward a parent that today has no other children.
It is a clever inversion, and a fragile one. The brands VYKO wants have their own histories and their own options, and owe nothing to a group that does not yet own them. Whether a national story is enough to bring them home is the question VYKO has chosen to answer last.
