China's Exoskeletons Learned to Walk Like You. Now They're Outdoor Gear.
Aoshark's gait-learning VIATRIX exoskeleton, the same hardware that played powered armor in The Wandering Earth 2, has crossed from factory-and-rehab kit into styled consumer outdoor gear. Apparel's next hardware frontier is a garment that tailors itself to your stride and cosplays as movie mecha at once.

The hardware rides on the hips like a holster and runs down each thigh in a hinged strut, the actuator housings left bare where a tailor would hide the seam. Worn over a shell jacket at a trailhead, Aoshark’s VIATRIX reads as powered armor, which is what the company builds: the same Shanghai firm supplied the exoskeleton suits worn as powered armor in The Wandering Earth 2. That factory-and-rehab hardware has now been restyled for the mountain, remade as a garment that learns your walk and cosplays as movie mecha. Its own history supplies the styling brief.
Aoshark is the trade name of ULS Robotics, a Shanghai company that has built industrial and rehab rigs since 2018 — waist supports, arm units, lower-limb models. VIATRIX is the turn outward, shown at Shanghai’s World AI Conference in July 2025 and styled, in the company’s words, for “outdoor enthusiasts.” It took a CES Innovation Award in Las Vegas this January as Aoshark’s first consumer product, with CEO Xu Zhenhua calling the launch the firm’s “official entry into the consumer market as a leader in industrial-grade exoskeletons.” The tool built for the warehouse now wants the trail.
Strip the marketing and the object does two jobs that should not sit together: it re-tailors itself to your stride in real time, and it turns you into a still from a science-fiction film.
VIATRIX puts 46 newton-meters of torque across both legs through automotive-grade servo motors, and its gait-learning system tunes that assist to your own walk instead of a stock average. That is bespoke fit by algorithm, not by tape measure. A Float360 floating hip joint leaves the hip motorless, so the frame follows a deep squat or a split without fighting the body. It holds 25 kilometers of range and works from minus 20 to 65 degrees Celsius, a spec sheet written for weather rather than the loading dock. The garment fits itself, continuously, the way nothing sewn ever has.
None of this arrives without ancestors. In February 1966 Paco Rabanne linked rhodoïd discs and aluminum with jump rings and pliers, not needles, and called the twelve pieces “Twelve Unwearable Dresses”. Hardware as garment is already sixty years old. What Rabanne could not do was teach the metal to read its wearer, which is the entire distance between a costume and a garment.
And the trend did not begin on a runway. It began on Chinese mountainsides, where scenic-area operators rent powered exoskeletons, roughly 1.8 kilograms each, to tourists at 60 to 80 yuan a go. Mount Tai ran a trial over Lunar New Year 2025 — developed by Kenqing Technology in partnership with Taishan Cultural Tourism Group, not Aoshark — and the Enshi canyon, Huangshan, and Helan Mountain followed. Older hikers and recovering knees incubated this look before any brand attached the word “design” to it. The trail came first; the algorithm and the CES jury came after.
Aoshark’s own tagline promises to lead the trend through technology, and it files VIATRIX under the label mecha. The gimmick risk is real. Bolt enough exposed actuators onto a body and you get cosplay, not clothing: novelty wearing the mask of design. What redeems it is the fit that thinks — a garment that reads your stride and responds in kind does tailoring’s oldest job by its newest means. Performance equipment and costume are now the same object, and this one is sold at the trailhead.
