Consumers Litigated a Blush for a Month. The Shade Engines Are Next.
The viral fight over Patrick Ta's 'transition blush' was filed as an appropriation story. It is also a preview: consumers now litigate color on skin in public, and the AI shade engines advertising 89,969 shades are about to inherit that scrutiny.

For a month this spring, the beauty internet argued about a blush. Most of the coverage asked who owned the technique; the sharper question is who gets trusted to sell color at all. An audience that will litigate a blush for a month is the audience every shade engine is about to inherit.
The dispute began in May, when Patrick Ta launched a Transition Blush line, sold individually or as an $88 set.
He told his TikTok followers he had created the technique himself, saying he had been developing the look since 2021. Viewers disagreed: the gradient flush traces to Ngozi Edeme, the artist known as Painted by Esther; she credits Danessa Myricks and Pat McGrath before her. Ta’s team had reached out about a paid session to learn the technique before the launch; Edeme declined. Edeme, who is Black, noted how hard the industry already is for someone like her. Nobody owns the way color travels across a cheek, and the comments said so.
By 16 June, Ta had apologized. “I have learned that impact matters more than intent,” he wrote, retreating from any claim to have invented a way of applying makeup. That was not contrition about manners — it was a market revoking a claim of authority over how color performs on skin.
The try-on engines make the same assertion, only larger. Perfect Corp advertises a shade finder that reads a face against a database of 89,969 shades, promising the “most accurate skin tone detection” from light to dark. Precision is the product.
A company that advertises ninety thousand shades has published a map — to its own worst one.
That some shade is rendered worst is already in the literature. A paper posted to arXiv in April measured how faithfully image pipelines reproduce skin tone across nearly twenty thousand renders; it found color error running consistently higher on darker complexions. The study concerned virtual humans, not blush. But a try-on engine does the same thing first. It reads a tone from a camera and reproduces it, before laying down any pigment.
The vendors’ own researchers are less certain than the marketing. A separate paper on foundation try-on argues that alpha blending, the quick method the field favors, cannot capture how pigment and skin interact, and reaches for an older optical model instead. The physics is still catching up to the pitch.
The blush fight ran a month over a technique any artist could copy. The engines are claiming far more, and staking revenue on it. A blush is a matter of taste; a shade match is a number, and numbers are harder to wave away. When the same audience opens the camera and the tone returns wrong, it will not accept “impact matters more than intent” from a company that promised the whole spectrum. It has already learned to check.
