Pádel Nuestro's Moat Is Everything It Refuses to Stock
Pádel Nuestro has built sixty-eight single-sport stores across eighteen countries, opening a two-floor Barcelona flagship in May and its first UK shop this month. While Decathlon and the broad-line chains keep padel to one aisle, the specialist's depth is the position a generalist cannot copy without giving up breadth.
Sir John Crabstone
Pádel Nuestro sells everything a padel court demands and nothing else. On that one sport it has built sixty-eight stores across eighteen countries, the newest its first in Britain, a Manchester shop opened this month. A generalist keeps padel to an aisle; this chain gives it every shelf. The narrowness is the strategy.
The visible half of that strategy is spectacle. In May, the chain opened a two-floor flagship steps from Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia, in a unit Tesla used to hold. Test courts sit downstairs, the newest rackets above. World number one Agustín Tapia was there for the ribbon-cutting; more than three hundred people turned out. The company calls this experience; a champion at a ribbon-cutting is the part any rival can rent by Friday.
The demand is not imagined. Britain, its newest market, went from fifteen thousand padel players in 2019 to more than four hundred thousand by 2024. A decade ago the sport barely existed there. Pádel Nuestro did not make that market. It arrived early enough to look as though it had.
The giants are not absent from the sport; they are diluted in it. Decathlon built its own padel label, Kuikma, and stocks it as one sport among dozens. For a retailer that wide, padel is a line to be weighed against surfing and running each quarter, and cut when a warmer category needs the room. For one that sells nothing else, it cannot be cut. It is the retailer.
Depth also pays. The Murcia group behind the chain took €58 million in revenue in 2024 and set out to expand worldwide. A single-sport retailer used to be a corner shop. This one is a chain, because the niche grew big enough to hold one.
Depth is the one advantage breadth cannot buy without ceasing to be breadth.
Which is also the flaw. A chain sworn to a single sport carries a risk no generalist has to underwrite: that the game cools. Breadth is dull because breadth is insured, its bets spread across dozens of sports so that a slump in any one barely shows. Pádel Nuestro sold that insurance to buy the lead, and the lead is only as safe as the game.
