Polite Society Supplied the Product. Ulta Ran the Machine.
Polite Society ran the largest affiliate campaign in its history inside Ulta Beauty's new TikTok Shop, with Ulta seeding the creators, shipping the samples, and funding the incentives. The retailer is no longer only stocking the brands it sells; it is running their distribution.

In March, Ulta Beauty became the first specialty beauty retailer in the country to open a TikTok Shop. It called the move a discovery play. A retailer used to stock a brand and leave the selling to it; Ulta has kept the stocking and taken the selling.
The proof arrived in June. Polite Society mounted the largest affiliate campaign in its history, and ran it inside Ulta’s TikTok Shop rather than the brand’s own. It seeded B.I.G Mouth XL, a $32 lip plumper, to more than a thousand creators and lifted their commission by seventy percent. One sells every sixty seconds, by the brand’s count. Polite Society paid for the product; Ulta chose who sold it.
The tell is in the labor. Ulta picked the creators by reach and sales potential, shipped the thousand samples, chased the ones who never posted, and helped fund the contests that kept the rest going. “Ulta has been a huge part of the back-end, logistical side,” Polite Society’s Tom Lusciatti told Glossy. A retailer does not usually run its supplier’s affiliate program.
The shelf now ships with a distribution engine.
None of this was built for Polite Society alone. Ulta opened its TikTok Shop with performance-based commission programs and exclusive bundles for more than fifteen brands. Polite Society is only the first to run the program flat out. What Ulta built once, it can offer every label on its shelf.
Read the launch coverage and this looks like a discovery story. Ulta’s chief merchandising officer called the shop “a complementary extension of [its] discovery ecosystem,” Fortune reported. Discovery is the retailer’s word for a customer it has not met yet. The story counts the new customer and forgets to ask who now owns the introduction to her. That is not discovery — it is distribution, and Ulta now runs it for the brands it buys from.
Polite Society still runs its own TikTok Shop. It spent its year’s biggest push filling Ulta’s instead. Every sale the creators drove landed on the retailer’s storefront, not the brand’s. The label that sold to Ulta now sells through it, and can no longer tell where its own audience ends and Ulta’s begins.
