Twenty Minutes of Saliva Grades Thirteen Years of Cycle Syncing
Saliva assays, sweat patches and wrist wearables are moving hormone measurement out of the lab and onto the consumer, and the first claims they will grade are the phase-keyed ones beauty has sold since 2013. The open question is not whether the number arrives, but who ends up holding it.

Continuous hormone sensing does to cycle-synced beauty what no advertising rule has managed: it puts the measuring instrument in the customer’s hands. Eli Health’s Hormometer reads cortisol from saliva and returns a value to a smartphone in about twenty minutes, and progesterone and testosterone joined the platform at CES 2026. Thirteen years of skincare, supplements and period care have been sold against a hormonal phase the buyer could not verify. Verification is now a consumer purchase. The claim does not become false. It becomes gradeable.
Cycle-synced marketing rests on one fragile input: knowing which phase the customer is in. Alisa Vitti coined the term in WomanCode, published in 2013, and trademarked the protocol that followed, and the commercial form arrived as product ranges keyed to the phases of a cycle. Rael now sells more than sixty products under what its chief executive calls a shift in how the company approaches cycle syncing, stocked at Ulta, Walmart and Walgreens. FEWE launched as a full cycle-care range matching products to each phase. None of it works if the phase is wrong. Until now the phase came from a calendar.
The calendar was never strong enough to carry that weight, and the evidence has been public since 2018. Sarah Johnson, Lorrae Marriott and Michael Zinaman followed 949 women through a full cycle with daily urine samples, using the luteinising hormone surge as ground truth. In a textbook 28-day cycle, the single likeliest day of ovulation carried a 21% probability, which means the best available calendar guess is wrong roughly four times in five. Their conclusion indicts the method rather than the software: cycle-length data alone cannot locate ovulation. Two of the three authors worked for SPD Development Company, the research arm of the business behind Clearblue, and the finding is worth reading with that interest visible.
The instruments arriving now measure rather than infer, and that is the whole difference. Wei Gao’s group at Caltech published a wearable aptamer patch in Nature Nanotechnology that reads estradiol straight from sweat, where the hormone sits at roughly a fiftieth of its concentration in blood. Detecting it there is the hard part; once detected, the reading is unambiguous, and the patch tracked the tenfold climb from menstruation to ovulation. Eli Health’s saliva stick does comparable work in a different medium and returns a value before the coffee cools. Mira’s February 2026 integration with Oura put measured hormone values beside ring-derived sleep and temperature trends inside a single app. A claim keyed to the luteal phase now has to survive that pairing.
The claim did not change; the audience acquired an instrument.
The strongest objection is that almost none of these devices measure a hormone at all. Clair, the Stanford-founded wrist wearable due to ship hardware in November, infers cycle phase from correlated physiology rather than assaying anything, and reports 94.1% accuracy on phase classification against clinical assays. That number was produced from a few dozen women, which makes it a model output rather than a measurement, and a model output is arguable in a way a laboratory result is not. Oura’s Menopause Insights, released on 1 May, pairs biometric trends with a 22-symptom questionnaire and claims no hormone reading whatsoever. Eli Health, which does assay directly, carries the disclaimer standard to the category: not for diagnosing, managing or treating any condition. For this argument to fail, consumer-side numbers would have to stay soft enough for a brand to dispute them on equal terms, leaving the standoff where it has always been.
The objection is right about the physics and wrong about the consequence. Falsification does not require precision. It requires a timestamp the seller does not control, and a claim that a product suits the luteal phase fails the moment the buyer’s own record places them in a different one. The FTC’s health products guidance, issued in December 2022, already covers health apps, equipment and diagnostic tests under the same competent-and-reliable-evidence standard it applies to what those tools are used to sell. A brand that attacks the customer’s sensor therefore invites the identical question about its own study. If sensor-derived phase data keeps improving at the rate of the past two years, the asymmetry that made cycle-synced marketing safe to write will not survive it.

Beauty has already found the defence, which is to own the instrument. Amorepacific’s Skinsight, built with MIT and named a CES 2026 Innovation Award honoree, is an adhesive strain sensor that reads skin tightness, temperature, moisture and light exposure at micrometre resolution. BeautyMatter reports that the company used it to substantiate a skin-tightness claim for Sulwhasoo’s First Care Activating Serum, and describes the platform as opening the door to efficacy validation driven by real-world data. That is a higher evidentiary bar than the category has ever set for itself. It is also a measurement the brand holds, and whoever holds the sensor picks the endpoint, picks the population and decides which run gets published.
The choice in front of the category is narrow, and it is being made this year. A brand can write claims tight enough to survive a customer’s own readout: name the hormone, name the window, name the effect size, and accept that part of the range will not clear the bar. Or it can build the sensor, keep the readout, and sell cycle syncing for another thirteen years with better charts. The first path costs revenue now and buys the first real evidentiary base this category has had. The second is cheaper, and it ends the way every unfalsifiable claim ends, with somebody else’s instrument answering the question.
