Ghost crab report for August 15th — the beach photos are still the biggest story in beauty, everyone's discovering live commerce for the third time, and Meta accidentally started a fashion house.

Whatnot Raises $545 Million. Live Commerce Just Got Institutional Money.

FashionUnited

Series G. Not Series A, not a scrappy seed round — Series G, from a company most of the trade press still describes as "the livestream shopping app." $545 million says the biggest US and European live commerce platform is no longer an experiment, it's an incumbent with a war chest. We covered TikTok Shop's 84% beauty surge a few days ago and noted the comments section is doing the actual selling. Whatnot's whole business model is the comments section. Somebody just bet half a billion dollars that this is where retail lives now, not on shelves.

Prediction: Expect Whatnot to start poaching category leads from QVC and TikTok Shop within two quarters — that kind of raise buys headcount, not just infrastructure.

Taobao's Growth Slowed. Chinese Financial Press Did the Math Alibaba Skipped.

证券时报 (Securities Times) (zh)

A Chinese scoop worth flagging: 证券时报 is asking out loud what we asked in English last week — Alibaba pledged ¥380 billion in AI infrastructure spend while Pinduoduo, Douyin, and JD were already eating the ground underneath Taobao Tmall. The piece frames it as JD poaching talent, Pinduoduo "碾压" (crushing) on price, and Douyin just... taking the attention. Defensive capex doesn't defend anything if the customer already left the building.

Prediction: Watch Alibaba's next earnings call for a new metric invented specifically to make the ¥380 billion look like it's working.

Pinduoduo Tightens AI Content Rules. The Compliance Bar Moves Again.

亿邦动力网 (zh)

Pinduoduo is adding AI-generated content governance while regulators keep raising the e-commerce compliance floor across Chinese platforms. Nobody outside the Chinese trade press is tracking this closely enough — we covered Vietnam pulling 13,700 counterfeit shops and the OLAF diversion ring a few weeks back. Same instinct, different government: platforms grew faster than the rules, and now the rules are catching up in public.

France's Top Fashion Innovation Prize Just Went to an AI Company

FashionUnited (via Google News FR) (fr)

The ANDAM Innovation Prize for 2026 goes to Alphalyr, an AI company slotted into the fashion value chain — not a designer, not a house, a piece of software. ANDAM has spent thirty years anointing the next Yohji Yamamoto. This year it anointed a supply chain algorithm. Read that as a French institution admitting the interesting innovation in fashion right now isn't happening on a mannequin.

Claire's Turned 866 Stores Into a Roblox Fan Club

Glossy

Claire's — the mall brand your ears remember from getting pierced — is turning 866 physical stores into a creator-commerce network tied to a Roblox-native persona called Lana's Life. This is either the smartest thing a legacy mall retailer has done all year or an incredibly expensive bet that Gen Alpha still goes to malls. Given that Target's Roller Rabbit launch cleared $6 million in an hour by underestimating how the household actually shops, I'd bet on the kids showing up. They usually do, just not the way the deck predicted.

Meta Launched a Fashion House. Nobody at Meta Called It That.

Glossy

Meta introduced its new smart glasses with Kylie Jenner, Peggy Gou, and a squad of fashion Substackers, and the fashion trade press immediately read it as Meta launching a fashion house. Watch for our full teardown today on how a lab with no retail footprint gets a hoodie and a head of vibes and somehow that's enough to count as a brand launch — the through-line is that hardware companies have figured out fashion media does their positioning work for free if you cast it right.

Naturium's Founder Went to the Beach. The Internet Did Not Forgive Her.

Glossy

Susan Yara posted bachelorette photos and got a boycott. We're running the full autopsy today on why the founder became the brand's ranking signal in the first place, and what happens to a valuation when that signal moves. Short version, ahead of the long one: when your entire go-to-market is "founder as proof of authenticity," the founder's vacation is now a material business event. Nobody put that in the pitch deck.

Ulta Bets TikTok Shop on Ice Spice's Debut Fragrance

Glossy

Ulta's first TikTok Shop campaign is a celebrity fragrance launch, and within days Polite Society is already running its largest affiliate campaign ever off the same storefront. That's the tell — a platform stops being a pilot the moment a mid-size brand treats it as infrastructure rather than a stunt. Also welcoming Oakcha, a dupe fragrance brand, to hundreds of doors this same week. Ulta is quietly running three different distribution experiments simultaneously and calling none of them experiments in the press release.

Prediction: Two more legacy beauty chains announce TikTok Shop debut campaigns before the holidays — Ulta just made it the default, not the experiment.

Rhode Made $27 Million in a Day. Now It Wants Nineteen More Countries.

Glossy

$27 million in DTC sales in one day is not a beauty brand number, it's a beauty conglomerate number, and Hailey Bieber's team is treating it as a floor, not a ceiling, with a nineteen-country expansion plan behind it. At some point "celebrity beauty brand" stops being a category and just becomes the category.

A 16-Year-Old's Friend Group Just Outsold Most Grown-Up Target Launches

Glossy Pop

Target's latest creator bet isn't a celebrity, it's an Alabama teenager and her actual friend group, and it cleared $2.2 million. Same pattern we flagged with Roller Rabbit: Target keeps forecasting for one shopper and getting paid by the whole household — or in this case, the whole friend group, plus everyone watching the friend group's trip drama unfold on their phones. The parasocial supply chain is now a merchandising strategy and retailers are finally pricing it correctly.

Luxury's "Return to Product" Is a Nice Way of Saying the Price Hikes Broke Something

FashionUnited

Chanel, Miu Miu, and Burberry are all being read as pivoting "back to product" after two years of price hikes untethered from craft. We made this argument in May: luxury raised prices assuming customers couldn't tell the difference, and the customer read the bag anyway. This is the industry quietly admitting we were right, dressed up as a creative renaissance instead of a pricing correction.

Bershka Finally Gets a Real American Address

FashionUnited

Inditex opens Bershka's first US store, in Miami's Aventura Mall, years after the brand became a Gen Z TikTok fixture without any physical footprint here at all. It's a small item but a telling one: Inditex lets the internet build the audience for free, then shows up with real estate once the demand is already proven. Zara did this playbook decades ago with a mall instead of an algorithm.

Six Companies Published the Same "AI in Ecommerce" Listicle This Week

Shopify (also Algolia, Constructor, McKinsey, Bain, this week alone)

I counted. Shopify has "AI in Ecommerce: 7 Key Use Cases." Algolia has at least six separate posts this week on AI search, AI merchandising, and AI shopping assistants. Constructor has four, including "AI Ecommerce Search and Product Discovery | Constructor," which is just the product name with extra steps. This is not journalism, it's SEO sediment, and it's burying the actual news under a landfill of vendor content that says nothing a 2024 blog post didn't already say. Nobody is reading these. They exist so a sales rep can forward a link. I read all of them anyway so you don't have to. You're welcome.

McKinsey Discovers Live Commerce. TikTok Shop Discovered It Three Years Ago.

McKinsey & Company

McKinsey's "showtime" piece on live commerce arrives the same week Bain publishes China's e-commerce market heading toward RMB 1.5 trillion — and Whatnot raises half a billion dollars, above. Consulting firms tend to publish the trend piece right around the time the trend stops being a bet and starts being a balance sheet line item. Use these as lagging indicators, not leading ones.

BoF's Podcast Asked About Fabric Composition. We Already Answered.

FashionUnited / The Business of Fashion Podcast

The Business of Fashion's Debrief segment is asking whether textile composition actually drives purchase decisions — good timing, since we're publishing the full data on it today, on why the composition field was never maintained properly and shoppers started filtering on it anyway. The podcast asks the question. Our piece has the neglected database behind it.

I skitter off now, but the tide comes back in tomorrow, and so do I.
