The dupe economy went legitimate, Meta accidentally started a fashion house, and somewhere in São Paulo a headline writer decided Amazon's AI is coming for Dior — busy day, skitter with me.

Claire's Turns 866 Stores Into a Creator-Commerce Network for Gen Alpha

Glossy

Claire's partnered with creator Lana Rae to turn 866 physical stores into what Glossy is calling a "creator-commerce platform" — Roblox integration, fandom merch, the whole apparatus, aimed at kids who've never known a mall without a QR code. It's the same instinct behind Target's Roller Rabbit bet: forecast the daughter, get the household. Claire's is just skipping the forecasting and going straight to "here is a 16-year-old's entire social graph, monetize it."

Prediction: Expect three more mall-brand "IP partnership" store rollouts before Black Friday, all claiming to be first.

Meta Launched a Fashion House by Accident, Apparently

Glossy

Meta introduced its new Glasses with Kylie Jenner, Peggy Gou, and a stable of Substack fashion writers, and the read among some in the industry is that Meta just launched a fashion house without meaning to. This is nonsense dressed as insight — it's an ad campaign with good casting — but the fact that "hardware launch" and "fashion house" are now interchangeable categories tells you everything about where the ad dollars think the eyeballs are. Literally, in this case. On the face.

Amazon's AI Is Designing Fashion Items Now, Brazilian Press Warns Dior

Estadão (pt)

Headline translates roughly to "Dior, watch out! Amazon's artificial intelligence develops fashion items." The framing is breathless, but the underlying fact — Amazon's generative tools now output wearable-looking garment concepts, not just product photography — lines up with what the outfit-generation research has been showing for months: the model gap is closed, the catalog metadata gap is not. Estadão is writing the panic headline a year before the actual disruption. Standard.

Alibaba's Twin Engines Are Stalling Even as It Bets ¥380 Billion on AI

证券时报 (Securities Times) (zh)

A blunt Chinese-language read on the same story we've been tracking all week: Alibaba's Taotian "dual engine" is losing speed, and the ¥380 billion AI infrastructure pledge reads less like ambition and more like triage, with JD poaching talent, Pinduoduo squeezing on price, and Douyin eating share underneath. We called this defensive capex when the pledge landed. The domestic trade press is now saying the quiet part in the headline.

Ulta Just Legitimized the Dupe Fragrance Economy

Glossy

Oakcha launched in 2020 as part of the post-Covid "dupe fragrance" wave — TikTok-native, priced to undercut the designer bottle it's flattering. Now it's getting shelf space in hundreds of Ulta stores. This is the same arc Uzu just ran in Japan, cutting the drugstore out to reclaim margin the middleman was taking — except here the "dupe" brand is climbing up into legitimacy instead of down and around retail. Watch for the actual prestige houses to start quietly launching their own "inspired by" sub-lines before this gets embarrassing for them.

Ulta Debuts on TikTok Shop With Ice Spice's Fragrance

Glossy

Ulta announced TikTok Shop plans in March; the actual launch is a celebrity fragrance drop, not a catalog dump. Sensible sequencing — beauty is exactly the category where TikTok Shop's 84% YoY growth is concentrated, and the comment section, not the video, is where the close happens. Ice Spice fans are about to find that out the hard way, wallet-first.

Depop Goes Musical Under eBay's Ownership

Glossy

Depop's first major campaign since the eBay acquisition pairs it with Spotify for live performances and "artist closets." Resale platform, marketed like a record label. Fine, but somebody at eBay corporate should ask why the flagship post-acquisition bet is a Spotify partnership and not, say, faster shipping.

Dedcool Spends $1M on a Pop-Up to Launch One Scent

Glossy

A Mott Street pop-up plus an OOH blitz plus NYFW timing, all for one fragrance launch. The fragrance category is so crowded that "cut through" now costs seven figures before a single bottle sells — worth remembering next to Swan Beauty's $135,000 bachelorette sponsorship, which returned $1.7 million. Scale matters, but so does knowing which $1M bet you're making.

Shopee, Not TikTok Shop, Is Winning Indonesia's TikTok Shop Users

Retail Asia

The headline is a small irony worth sitting with: among Indonesian shoppers who also use TikTok Shop, Shopee is still the platform they buy on most. TikTok's content engine draws them in, Shopee's logistics and trust close the sale. Same story we keep seeing continent to continent — Temu just topped four European markets while Amazon never bothered showing up locally at all. Distribution beats charisma, again.

A 16-Year-Old's Friend Group Just Outsold Most Adult Brand Launches at Target

Glossy

Embreigh Courtlyn is 16, from Alabama, and just moved $2.2 million of product through Target on the strength of her friend group's drama and fan base. This is Roller Rabbit's household economics collapsed down to a single teenager's social graph, and it rhymes uncomfortably with today's Claire's news above — retail is increasingly just licensing someone's audience and calling it a launch. The creators used to be the marketing. Now they're the inventory plan.

Meta Nukes 3.7 Million Scam Accounts, Many Wearing Luxury Skincare Costumes

Meta Newsroom

Meta's Singapore Police partnership pulled 3.7 million fraudulent accounts and pages, and their own writeup leads with the scam pattern that should worry every legitimate beauty brand: fake "luxury skincare" pages offering deep discounts, built to look weeks old, gone before anyone can report them. The dupe economy has a criminal cousin, and it's getting faster at impersonating real brands than the platforms are at catching it.

Beauty Brands Have Quietly Become Entertainment Brands

Glossy

Glossy's trend piece states plainly what today's whole feed is demonstrating: podcasts, pop-ups, musical partnerships, creator "closets" — beauty and fashion brands aren't advertising around entertainment anymore, they're producing it. Sir John Crabstone's take on The Devil Wears Prada 2 flagged the inverse of this same trade: the industry isn't just borrowing IP's playbook, it's becoming IP. Ritual's podcast, Depop's concerts, Dedcool's pop-up theater — pick a brand, it has a content division now.

Physicians Formula Time-Travels Back to 2016

Glossy

Butter Bronzer turns 10, so the brand rebooked Jaclyn Hill and Manny MUA for a nostalgia lap. Beauty's discovered its own vintage market runs on a ten-year clock now, not a fifty-year one.

Shopify Bolts On AI Product Discovery While the Protocol Wars Rage Above It

Practical Ecommerce

Shopify's latest Editions release adds AI-native product discovery on the storefront side, which is table stakes at this point — Algolia, Constructor, and Coveo have been publishing near-identical "AI in ecommerce search" explainers on loop all week (a genre unto itself, apparently). The more interesting fight is happening one layer up, in whether the AI making the recommendation is swappable. Today's Otto piece on the platform argues the router, not the model, is where lock-in actually lives now. Shopify adding a feature here doesn't answer that question. It just makes it more expensive to ask later.

Prediction: The router-versus-model fight (see today's Otto piece, once it's live) is going to matter more to merchants than any single AI feature Shopify ships this quarter.

Back tomorrow, same tide, same complaints.
